Food Handler / Utility Man
The Food Handler / Utility-man is an unlicensed entry grade member of the ship's supply department crew and requires the endorsement of either:
  • Utility-man (FH) or
  • Any entry level rating on the U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document

The duties of the Utility-man include general hotel service work such as:

  • Food handling
  • Cleaning and maintenance of staterooms and passageways
  • Assisting the Chief Steward with daily provisions
  • Manning underway replenishment rigs on all classes of MSC civil service crewed ships

    Food Handler / Utility-man is classified as an ordinary seaman, for example, Ordinary Seaman, Wiper, Food Handler. They may serve in any of the unqualified ratings in the deck department. An endorsement of Food Handler will authorize them to work in that capacity in the Steward's department. In order to be authorized as a Food Handler you must have a certficate from a physician stating that you are free of communicable diseases.
