Keeping Your Job
|
||||
| So you're hired and on board pursuing the career that so many of your friends envy. How do you keep it? For a period of time specified by the company, you are put on probation. During this probationary period the management, clients, project managers and your fellow co-workers evaluate you. If you're doing well and you receive positive feedback from management, don't let it go to your head. You must be productive at all times. Remember, for every job on a ship, there are ten others willing to take your place. Ten Commandments for Success: 1.Be flexible! What ever the company or someone asks of you, do it with a smile (as long as it applies to your particular department). No one is indispensable. 2. Refrain from complaining! People who work on ships find they have nothing to talk about except ships so they find things to complain about. Don't get caught up in it. 3. Don't gossip to crew or clients. It always comes back to haunt you. It's a small city on board and everyone knows everything about everybody. 4. Be careful who you trust with any private matters or your inner most thoughts. Friendships are made and broken in a matter of weeks. Think twice before revealing your ambitions with other crewmembers. Some of them in positions of authority can be a little insecure. They see others as a threat to their job security. As with any job, it can be political at times so watch what you say and to whom. 5. Always show respect to the officers on board. 6. All aboard is one half hour before sailing time. For example, Sailing Time is 4 PM and all aboard is 3:30 PM. always start your return at least 45 minutes before All Aboard. 7. Do not miss the ship! If you do, the captain will surrender your passport to the port officials. If you had an accident or otherwise, you will need to get a police report to get back on the ship. To identify yourself as a crewmember, provide the police with your Crew Identification Card They will complete the proper paperwork and contact the port officials. When the police have finished with you, you must go directly to the port official's office. They will take you directly to the airport, return you your passport and put you on the first flight to your ship's next Port-of-Call and you are responsible for paying all traveling expenses. 8. If you miss the ship for an invalid reason like oversleeping because you had too much fun the night before, you're history! 9. Problems, questions, concerns, suggestions? Always go through the proper chain of command. 10. Look sharp, well groomed and smile at all times in public areas, your appearance and demeanor says a lot about you. If you do hit the bars, be known for your sobriety. . |
