STCW Made Simple
STCW-95 Requirements for Vessels greater than 200 Gross Tons, operating outside the boundary line. Mariners who begin a sea career before August 1, 1998 may continue to meet STCW-98 until February 1, 2002. Mariners who begin a sea career after August 1, 1998 must meet the requirements of STCW-95.
SECTION A - STCW-95 Requirements
- Basic Safety Training (BST) REQUIRED FOR ALL!
a. Personal / Water Survival
b. Fire Prevention / Fire Fighting
c. Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities
d. Elementary First Aid
- Meet D.O.T. physical standards
- Global Maritime Distress Satellite System (GMDSS), and Automatic Radar Plotting Aids (ARPA) operations. (Masters/Mates MAY require).
- Proficiency Assessment - Operation of Survival Craft
ALL licensed officers (Deck/Engineering) also Able Seaman, QMED/Oilers, and Lifeboatman WILL require.
- Bridge Teamwork Management Procedures (Required for Masters/Mates).

If your sea service began BEFORE August 1, 1998, then STCW-95 Basic Safety Training is REQUIRED
AND
Meet all other present existing standards for STCW-78 (Form issued by USCG - Mariners MUST meet STCW-95 requirements listed in the table above in order to continue service after February 1, 2002.
If your sea service began AFTER August 1, 1998, then you MUST MEET THE STCW-95 REQUIREMENTS. |
