The Unlicensed Junior Engineer is an unlicensed member of the ship's engine department crew and requires an endorsement of Unlicensed Junior Engineer or qualified member of the engine department of any rating on the U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document.

Unlicensed Junior Engineers stand engine room watch, assist licensed engineers with control room operations and maintain the shipboard propulsion equipment and auxiliary machinery on all classes of crewed ships.
